Winter/Spring 2012: Beginning through Advanced Flamenco Classes with Maestra Maria Gitana

Learn the exciting rhythms and footwork of flamenco, the dance that originates with the gypsies of southern Spain. The Spanish Dance Society, an international organization dedicated to excellence in Spanish dance, teaches flamenco through a structured syllabus and certificate program.

Maria Gitana, a Maestra de Baile with S.D.S, offers technique for castanets, arms, turns and footwork and a complete choreography each 8 week session. Women need a long full skirt and all students need to wear sturdy heeled shoes (new and gently used flamenco shoes available for purchase). Castanets are available for purchase at class for $25-$40, or bring your own.

Nov 6 & 13: Maria Gitana Offers Spanish Dance Certification Review Classes

Spanish Dance Society certification exams to be held in Seattle, WA on Friday Nov. 11 and Monday Nov. 14, 2011. Review classes to be held on Nov. 6 and Nov. 13.

Maria Gitana, a Maestra de Baile with the international Spanish Dance Society, is hosting SDS Certification Exams for the third time in Seattle.  Offered every few years, these are the only S.D.S. certifications ever offered in the Western United States.  Dance students beginning their study of the Spanish Dance Society syllabus in Fall may be eligible for entry level certification.  This is an exceptional opportunity for students considering a profession in dance to begin building a dance resume.

Certification exams are $25. per student.  Exams will take place at the Flamenco Gitana studio in Seattle. Review classes in preparation for certification exams will be held on Sunday Nov. 6 for Ingreso (noon to 2pm) and Primer Año (2 to 4pm). Review classes on Sunday Nov. 13 are for Segundo Año (noon to 2pm) and Tercer Año (2 to 4pm). $20 per session or two for $35.

Learn flamenco guitar accompaniment with Marcos Carmona

Marcos Carmona, guitarist and artistic director of Carmona Flamenco, offers instruction in flamenco guitar technique, repertoire, and accompaniment.

Accompaniment instruction is ideal for guitarists wishing to learn more about working with singers and dancers. Marcos also offers coaching for dancers and singers wishing to to improve their understanding of the guitar and the musical interactions of flamenco.

Marcos brings to his teaching over forty years of experience accompanying outstanding singers and dancers in Spain, California and Seattle. One-on-one classes, workshops and small group classes can all be arranged.

Fall/Winter 2011: Dance and Cante Classes with Rubina Carmona

Rubina Carmona teaches beginning through advanced flamenco dance at American Dance Institute, 8007 Greenwood Ave. N in Seattle.

Mondays
6 pm: Beginning technique, upper body, footwork, palmas, basic castanets. Fall classes feature Fandangos de Huelva; sevillanas will be taught Feb. through May, 2012.
7 pm: Beginning repertoire. Fall classes feature soleares with manton de Manila.

Thursdays
6 pm: advanced repertoire (tarantos)
7 pm: intermediate repertoire (cantiñas)
Beginning in January: Bamberas at 6, Farruca at 7.

In addition, Rubina offers a class in cante for dancers and singers who work with dancers. This class is held in the north end on Sundays 12-1:15 pm. Letras provided. Class fee of $15 includes live accompaniment.

Rubina also offers private classes in cante and baile by appointment at her home studio in West Seattle.  In addition, she is available for consultation classes on “What to do with your Stuff”– i.e. how to use all that cool material you just learned in the latest workshop!  With a lifetime of experience as a singer/dancer, Rubina is uniquely equipped to help you put your material in context.
